The invention aims to provide a process for producing 1,2,3-tri-O-acetyl-5- deoxyribofuranose by an industrially suitable means. The invention provides a process for the production of 1,2,3-tri-O-acetyl-5-deoxyribofuranse which comprises hydrogenating a compound represented by the general formula (1) or (2) in the presence of a metal catalyst: [wherein P1 and P2 are each independently hydrogen or acyl, or OP1 and OP2 may be united to form an acetal group; and R is hydrogen, alkyl, aryl, aralkyl or acyl] [wherein X1 is Br or I; P3 and P4 are each independently hydrogen or acyl; and R is hydrogen, alkyl, aryl, aralkyl or acyl].
