ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The hydroxyl group content of preforms manufactured by the MCVD process for use in manufacturing optical fibres is reduced by conducting isotopic exchange between hydrogen and deuterium near the internal walls of the silica glass supporting tube. The operation is carried out in two steps, first by inducing deuterium adsorption and then by thermally activating the ex- change reaction. The fibres obtained from the preforms have improved light-transmitting properties as they are not subject to attenuation due to absorption corresponding to the second and third overtones of the vibration of the -OH bond.
