3115 ABSTRACT Process for the preparation of a 2-pyrrolidon by catalytic hydroge- nation of a succinonitrile in the liquid phase with the aid of an in the liquid phase suspended catalyst in the presence of ammonia and treatment of the hydrogenated product with water whereby the succinonitrile, dissolved in liquid ammonia, is subjected to the hydrogenation which is carried out in a continuous manner in two or more series-connected stirred reactors.
