Abstract: The present invention is directed to an improved process for the production of 2,3-dichloro-1-propanol in high yield by chlorinating allyl alcohol with chlorine, wherein the chlorination reaction proceeds by simul- taneously introducing allyl alcohol and chlorine gas and optionally hydrogen chloride gas into the reaction system containing aqueous hydrochloric acid without the necessity of extreme cooling and/or pressure.
