Improved separations of xylose, mannose, galactose, arabinose, glucose, xylitol, arabitol, sorbitol, galactitol, or mannitol (and other monosaccharides and sugar alcohols) from other sugars and sugar alcohols may be achieved by chromatography over hydroxyl-form anion exchange surfaces prepared from anion exchange resins at relatively low hydroxyl concentrations. When a strong base anion exchange resin, such as a chloride-form strong base anion exchange resin, is conditioned with a low concentration of hydroxyl (for example, an NaOH solution with a concentration between 0.1 and 1000 nM, most preferably between 1 and 10 mM), the conditioned resin separates a number of sugars and sugar alcohols from one another, while still allowing ready desorption from the resin.

L'invention concerne des séparations améliorées de xylose, mannose, galactose, arabinose, glucose, xylitol, arabitol, sorbitol, galactitol, ou mannitol (ainsi que d'autres monosaccharides et alcools de sucre) d'autres sucres et alcools de sucres. Lesdites séparations peuvent être réalisées par chromatographie sur des surfaces échangeuses d'anions sous forme hydroxyle préparées à partir de résines échangeuses anioniques à des teneurs hydroxyle relativement faibles. Lorsqu'une résine échangeuse anionique à forte base, telle qu'une résine échangeuse anionique à forte base sous forme de chlorure, est conditionnée avec une faible teneur en hydroxyle (par exemple une solution NaOH avec une teneur se situant entre 0,1 et 1000 mM, de préférence entre 1 et 10 mM), ladite résine permet de séparer, les uns des autres, un certain nombre de sucres et d'alcools de sucres, avec désorption rapide à partir de la résine.
