ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention provides in a process for the tempering of glass wherein the glass is heated to a temperature above the glass transformation temperature and below the softening temperature and then quenched the improvement in which the glass is immersed in a vessel in which there are two mutually immiscible liquids in two layers one above the other wherein the liquids are of different densities whereby the glass is precooled for a specific time in the liquid of lower density whereupon for final quenching the glass is passed into the liquid of higher density.
