ABSTRACT Optical fibre preforms for drawing in fibres for use in the mid infrared spectral range are formed by vapourizing halides under the influence of heat and reduced pressure and directing them towards the cooled internal wall of a glass tube which is translated, and also rotated if circumferentially uniform disposition is required, so as to form a preform. The preform so formed may be collap- sed, and if the tube is of oxide rather than halide glass, its material is stripped from the preform.
