ABSTRACT To achieve rapid and uniform cooling of glass by introducing it into a fluidised bed of particles under conditions such that heat is transferred from the glass to the fluidised material, the fluidised material consists of or includes particles of a solid or predominantly solid material which can be caused to undergo endothermic change such as to leave a solid particulate residue by heating it to a temperature lower than the temperature of the glass as the glass enters the fluidised bed. The endothermic change may be loss of hydroxyl groups and/or water. The process of the invention is useful in thermal tempering of glass.
