ABSTRACT To achieve favourable and uniform rates of heat exchange in a process for cooling glass (e.g. in order to temper it) by introducing the glass into a fluidised bed of particles, the velocity of the fluidising gas is above the value V0 corresponding with the expansion peak on the bed height/gas velocity curve but not more than 1.2 times that value. A fluidisation apparatus suitable for use in such process comprises a pressure chamber surmounted by a flui- dising vessel whose floor is porous, the pores being less than 60 microns in size.
