A process to control the redox state of a molten glass mass containing electrochemically active species, to modify the physical and chemical properties of said glass mass, comprising: introducing at least two electrodes, as an anode and a cathode, in said molten glass mass; applying a controlled electric voltage and a resulting direct current through said electrodes, to control the redox state of the electrochemically active species contained in the molten glass mass, from a lower valence to a higher valence and vice versa by electrochemically oxidation and reduction; introducing sensor means in said molten glass mass, providing signals representative of a redox state of said electrochemically active species contained in the molten glass mass; feeding said signals representative of the redox state of the electrochemically active species to a data processor to process them and provide control signals to actuators, to control the voltage and resulting direct current applied to said electrodes, whereby the redox state of said electrochemically active species in the glass mass is controlled to provide the desired color, physical and chemical properties to the glass.
