TITLE PRODUCTION OF FOREIGN PROTEINS IN YEAST INVENTORS David Y. Thomas Piotr R. Stepien Roland Brousseau Ray Wu Saran Narang ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Hybrid genes composed of at least two parts, the first part coding for at least part of a protein produced by a yeast and a second part coding for a protein foreign to said yeast can be produced, inserted into cloning vehicles, especially plasmids, and these cloning vehicles then inserted into cells of species of yeast. These modified yeast cells can then be cultured in much the same way as normal yeast cells and, when desired, the hybrid gene can be induced, by use of an appropriate induc- tion signal, to produce a hybrid protein which can be separated from or secreted by the yeast cells and which, before or after separation or secretion, can be split into at least two parts so that the protein produced by the part of the hybrid gene coding for a protein foreign to said yeast can be isolated and purified.
