ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The batch used for forming glass filaments comprises between 1% and 25% by weight of finely divided fiber derived from one or more fiberizing processes and containing on or about its surface, a proportion of non-mineral material with the remaining proportion being new melted glass. The condi- tions within the glass melt to which the said batch is fed, is maintained in an oxidizing condition during the melting operation of said batch. Alternatively, some or all of the non-mineral material may be burned off the finely divided material before it is added to the batch. This enables a percentage of scrap fiber to be incorporated thus reducing waste. The apparatus consists of means whereby the scrap is shredded and crushed to a finely divided state and some of the non-mineral substances may be burned off at this stage where- upon the remaining material is transferred to a hopper or similar storage means.
