A process is disclosed for the production of con- nected microgel particles. According to the process, starting microgel particles having particle sizes of 100-0.01 µm and a particle size distribution whose standard deviation is not greater than 100% of a mean particle size of the starting microgel particles are dispersed in a matrix component. The starting microgel particles are soaked with a monomer. The monomer is then polymerized, whereby the starting microgels are connected together. Also disclosed is an article com- prising a base material and a layer of such connected microgel particles formed on a surface of the base material.
