A pulley with automatic emergency brake comprises a braking system having having a right-angled triangular double walled rocker arm secured to the outside a pulley yoke by pivot pins. A snatch block is fastened at a right-angle level of the rocker arm near a pull rope. An adjustable counterweight is mounted at the level of the smaller acute angle. At the level of the greater acute angle, a transverse axle pin bearing a grip wedge can be inserted between the rope lodged in the pulley race and a bushing to block the rope in the race.
