Abstract of the Disclosure The invention provides compounds of the Formula I Image and salts and quaternary salts thereof (wherein R is hydrogen, halogen, lower alkyl, nitro, hydroxy, amino, lower alkoxy, carboxy or a derivative of the carboxy group; R1 stands for hydrogen, halogen or lower alkyl; R2 stands for an alkyl group having 1 to 16 carbon atoms; R3 is an alkyl group having 1 to 16 carbon atoms, a C7-12 aralkyl group optionally halogeno substituted in the aromatic ring; or a cycloalkyl-alkyl group having 6 to 12 carbon atoms; R4 represents a single electron pair, a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group; the dotted lines represent optional further bonds; with the proviso that if all the dotted lines are further bonds, R2 and R3 are methyl and R1 is hydro- gen, then R is other than hydrogen or 7-methyl; and with the further proviso that if all the dotted lines are further double bonds, R2 is methyl, R3 is ethyl and R1 is hydrogen, then R is other than hydrogen or 7-bromine and with the further proviso that if all the dotted lines are further bonds, R2 is methyl, R3 is ethyl and R1 is 6-methyl, then R is other than8-methyl). The compounds are useful as analgesics.
