The present invention provides new compositions of matter, referred to as quasi-crystalline carboxylates (QCCs), their preparation and use. The materials comprise a quasi-crystalline hydrated magnesium-aluminium hydroxy carboxylate and are characterised by the presence of at least a strong reflection in the powder X-ray diffraction pattern at a basal spacing in the range of 5 to 15 .ANG.. The invention further relates to a process for preparing the QCCs, Mg-Al solid solutions and anionic clays under acidic conditions. The QCC is prepared by aging an acidic mixture of a magnesium carboxylate and an aluminium source. Calcination of the QCC results in a Mg-Al solid solution; rehydration of this solid solution gives an anionic clay.

La présente invention concerne de nouvelles compositions de matières appelées carboxylates quasi-cristallins (QCC), ainsi que leur préparation et leur utilisation. Ces matières comprennent un carboxylate hydroxylé d'aluminium et de magnésium hydraté quasi-cristallin et sont caractérisées par la présence d'au moins une grande réflexion dans le diagramme de diffraction de rayons X sur poudre, à un espacement de base de l'ordre de 5 à 15 .ANG.. L'invention concerne en outre une méthode de préparation du QCC, de solutions solides Mg-Al et d'argiles anioniques dans des conditions d'acidité. Le QCC est préparé par vieillissement d'un mélange acide d'un carboxylate de magnésium et d'une source d'aluminium. La calcination du QCC produit une solution solide Mg-Al, et la réhydratation de cette solution solide donne une argile anionique.
