ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention relates to a process for preparing a racemic cis or trans hydroxyiminooctahydroindolo (2,3-a) quinolizine derivative of formula II or an optically active form thereof Image (II) wherein R1 and R2 are identical or different alkyl groups having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms or a pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salt thereof, which process comprises treating a racemic cis or trans compound of formula IV Image (IV) or an optically active form thereof, wherein R2 is as defined above and R3 is an alkyl group of from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, with t-butyl nitrite in an aromatic hydrocarbon solvent followed by treatment with an alkali metal tertiary alcoholate and where required forming a pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salt thereof, and to the compounds of formula II and their pharma- ceutically acceptable acid addition salts so formed. Compounds of formula II have pharmaceutical activity and are also useful as intermediates in the preparation of other pharmaceutical compounds.
