A pivot block for use in a windshield wiper apparatus is described. The pivot block comprises a first member for attachment to a windshield wiper arm and a second member for attachment to a windshield wiper blade. The first member and the second member are connected by a pivot arm arranged such that the second member pivots relative to the first member. The second member includes shoulders that contact the first member, thereby limiting the range of pivoting motion. In operation, the pivot block promotes tilting of the windshield wiper blade when the windshield wiper arm completes movement in one direction. This in turn orients the windshield wiper blade to clean the windshield as the windshield wiper arm moves in the opposite direction. As a consequence, the windshield wiper blade runs smoothly across the windshield during the windshield wiping process without skipping or jumping regardless of the direction in which the windshield wiper arm is moving.
