An annular radial seal has a sealing axis and a sealing lip of polymeric material for the engagement of the circumference of a shaft to be sealed. The sealing lip has circumferentially evenly distributed radially protruding ribs and is radially inwardly defined by a frustoconical inner surface, the diameter of which increases away from the space to be sealed. At that side of the sealing lip remote from the sealed space the inner surface defines a first angle with the sealing axis direction, which is 0.02 to 0.5 times as large the magnitude of a second angle defined by the inner surface and the sealing axis direction at the side of the sealing lip adjacent the sealed space. The ribs are formed by an undulation of the inner surface which extends only in circumferential direction along a circumferential line. The seal has excellent operating characteristics over a long service period, provides improved sealing results and reliably prevents leakage of the liquid present in the space to be sealed whether the shaft is stationary or rotating and independently of the direction of rotation of the shaft.
