ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A cylinder of a reciprocating piston internal combustion engine is provided, at the joint between the light alloy cylinder head and the cylinder barrel, with a sealing element comprising, on the surface facing the combustion chamber, a heat-insulating layer. The layer serves as a heat insulation for the sealing surfaces of the light alloy cylinder head and cylinder barrel, for the purpose of preventing heat stresses and relative radial movement, resulting from non-uniform thermal expansion, the cylinder barrel being preferably heat insulated on the internal surface also adjacent the layer.
