RECOVERY OF PYRCLYTIC ENERGY IN THE PRODUCTION OF VINYL CHLORIDE BY SUBJECTING 1,2-DICHLOROETHANE TO AN INCOMPLETE THERMAL CRACKING REACTION ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: Pyrolytic energy is recovered in the production of vinyl chloride, wherein liquid 1,2-dichloroethane is preheated under pressure, evaporated and introduced in gaseous form into a craking zone, subjected to an incomplete thermal cracking reaction therein, the re- sulting hot cracked gases maintained under pressure are cooled and succesively separated into their con- stituents in a plurality of distilling zones for re- moval of hydrogen chloride, vinyl chloride, and high boilers therefrom, and for recovery of unreacted 1,2- dichloroethane. To this end, the hot cracked gases are cooled in at least one heat exchanger of which the jacket side has a heat transfer agent or coolant passed through it, the heat transfer agent or coolant with the heat ab- sorbed therein being removed for use elsewhere in the process.
