A composite panel having front and back faces, the panel comprising facing reinforcement, backing reinforcement and matrix material binding to the facing and backing reinforcements, the facing and backing reinforcements each independently comprising one or more reinforcing sheets, the facing reinforcement being located on or embedded in matrix material adjacent to the front face of the panel, the backing reinforcement being located in a plane or planes substantially parallel to the plane or planes of the facing reinforcement, and being substantially coextensive therewith, and spaced therefrom by matrix material, the facing and backing reinforcements being interconnected to resist out-of-plane relative movement. The reinforced composite panel is useful as a barrier element for shielding structures, equipment and personnel from blast and/or ballistic impact damage.

L'invention concerne un panneau composite présentant des faces avant et arrière. Ce panneau comporte un renfort avant, un renfort arrière et un matériau matriciel lié aux renforts avant et arrière. Ces renforts avant et arrière comportent chacun, indépendamment, une ou plusieurs feuilles de renfort. Le renfort avant est situé sur le matériau matriciel adjacent à la face avant du panneau ou incorporé à ce matériau. Le renfort arrière est situé dans un (des) plan(s) sensiblement parallèle(s) au(x) plan(s) du renfort avant, de manière sensiblement coextensive à ce dernier, et espacé du renfort avant par l'intermédiaire dudit matériau matriciel. Les renforts avant et arrière sont interconnectés, de façon à pouvoir résister à un mouvement relatif en dehors du plan. Ce panneau composite renforcé s'utilise comme élément barrière pour protéger des structures, des équipements et des personnes contre des déflagrations et/ou des impacts de balles.
