ABSTRACT A process for preparing a fiber-reinforced, glass matrix composite and a composite as made by the process. The process employs forming a dilute aqueous slurry of solids comprising glass fibers, reinforcing fibers and binder material which may be partially or completely fibrous. The dilute aqueous slurry is destabilized and the solids are collected on a porous support means. They are then dewatered and dried to form a composite mat which can be hot-pressed into an article of manufacture. The hot-pressed article of manufacture may then be heated, in the absence of pressure, to a temperature above the softening point of the glass, but below the degradation temperature of the reinforcing fibers, to provide a lofted composite. 34,034C-FF
