A process is disclosed for the removal of sulfur dioxide from a stream of gases by contacting the stream with a liquid absorbent which is a) a specified non-cyclic sulfone or b) a specified non-cyclic sulfonamide, and, thereafter, separating the formed sulfur dioxide-rich absorbent from said stream.
