A rotary drive downhole pumping system is provided for reducing operating costs in upstream oil and gas operations. In a first aspect a low energy, low wear, rotary downhole pumping system is driven by rods external to the production tubing string and by a gear box located below the pump. In a second aspect a downhole electric motor replaces the gear box, and electric cable is strung down the well beside the production tubing, to provide an electrically-driven, rodless, rotary downhole pumping system. In a third aspect a gear box is provided inside the production tubing above the pump, and the rod string is inside the production tubing above the gear box. All of the above versions of the pumping system should significantly reduce the energy required to pump the reservoir fluids, improve reliability, and reduce servicing costs.
