ABSTRACT This invention relates to methods of preventing or reducing the degradation of elastin and other proteins and there- by preventing or retarding the disease states caused by said degradation by administering compounds of the formula: Image wherein R1 is: a) hydrogen; or b) alkyl of 1 to 6 carbon atoms, inclusive; wherein R2 is: a) hydroxy; or b) alkoxy of 1 to 6 carbon atoms, inclusive; wherein R3 is: a) -C(O)R4; b) -CH(OH)R4; c) -CH2R4; or d) -CH=CHR4; wherein R4 is alkyl of 13 to 25 carbon atoms inclusive, or a pharmacologically acceptable salt thereof.
