The present invention discloses a process for removing undesired particles from a gas stream including the steps of contacting a composition containing one or more tetrahedrally coordinated ions with the gas stream; collecting the undesired particles and ions on a collection surface to form an aggregate comprising the ions and undesired particles on the collection surfaced and removing the agglomerate from the collection zone. The ions can include silicate ions, phosphate ions, sulfate ions, aluminate ions, and ammonium ions. A preferred composition includes a mixture of mono-phosphate and di-metal phosphate ions. The process may be applied to electrostatic precipitators and filtration systems to improve undesired particle collection efficiency.
