A scrubbing tower for flue-gas desulfurization has a device for introducing additives like lime and limestone to the reaction zone of the scrubber by feeding those additives to a recirculating system recirculating the liquid through the sump. The recirculating system can also be used to withdraw the suspension from the columnwhose sump is cylindrical with a flat bottom. Recirculated liquid is introduced close to this bottom by the recirculating pump. With the scrubbing tower of the invention excessive tower height is avoided and effective sump mixing and internal circulation is achieved. Furthermore, shut down of the gas scrubbing operation no longer leads to difficulties in redistributing calcium sulfate deposits in the sump upon restart.
