A stretcher, for carrying a person with reduced physical capabilities, is equipped with a brake mechanism to slow down or stop the movement of the stretcher when the stretcher is supported by an inclined surface. The brake mechanism is affixed to the front portion of the frame of the stretcher and can be selectively activated by moving a pull member. The movement of the stretcher is progressively stopped when the brake mechanism is progressively engaged between the stretcher and the inclined surface supporting the stretcher. The position of the pull member in respect to the stretcher influences the amount of braking force generated by the brake mechanism. The brake mechanism can be built-in the stretcher or be retrofirted on a stretcher having no brake mechanism installed.
