ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Disclosed are substituted heterocyclylisoquinolinium salts of the formula: Image (wherein R1 is hydrogen or alkyl, R2 and R3 are each hydrogen or alkyl or together form cycloalkyl or alkylidene, R4 and R5 are alkynyl, alkoxy, (substituted) phenyl, (substituted) 5- or 6- membered monocyclic aromatic heterocyclic ring system, (substituted) 9- or 10-membered bicyclic aromatic heterocyclic ring system or (substituted) 5- or 6-membered monocyclic non- aromatic heterocyclic system, or R2 and R4 and/or R3 and R5 together form a bicyclic ring system, R6 is hydrogen or substituent, and A is (substituted) 5- or 6-membered monocyclic aromatic heterocycle containing two to three heteroatoms, and X- is anion), pharmaceutical compositions containing them and methods for the treatment or prevention of neurodegenerative disorders or neurotoxic injuries utilizing them.
