The present invention is concerned with novel sulphuric acid esters of sugar alcohols and sugar alcohol-like compounds of general formulae Ia and Ib Image Ia Image Ib wherein n1-n9 are each independently 0 or 1; and m1-m9 are each independently 0 or 1, but with the proviso that at least one of m1, m2 and m3, at least one of m4, m5 and m6 and, when present, at least one of m7, m8 and m9 is 1; and wherein X1-X18 each independently signify -O-, -CONR1-,-NR1CO- or-NR1-; R1 signifies hydrogen or lower alkyl; W signifies a benzene group or a s-triazine group; Y1-Y9 each independently signify aromatic ring systems; A1-A3 each independently signify a residue of a sugar alcohol devoid of the 1-hydroxy group or a derivative thereof, a residue of a sugar acid devoid of the 1-carboxy group or a derivative thereof or the tris-(hydroxymethyl)-methyl group; D signifies the di-residue of a sugar alcohol devoid of 2 hydroxy groups or a derivative thereof or the di-residue of a sugar dicarboxylic acid devoid of 2 carboxy group or a derivative thereof; Q1-Q3 and Z1-Z3 each independently represent the di-residue of a sugar alcohol devoid of 2 hydroxy groups or a derivative thereof or the di-residue of a sugar dicarboxylic acid devoid of 2 carboxy groups or a derivative thereof or a didesocyglycopyranoside residue or a derivative thereof, with at least one hydroxy group of residues A1-A3, D, Q1-Q3 and Z1-Z3 being esterified with sulphuric acid, and pharmaceutically usable salts thereof. The compounds in accordance with the invention such as, for example, Image are suitable for the treatment of disorders which are characterized by excessive or destructive proliferation of smooth muscle cells.
