A novel sustained release composition is provided herein. The composition includes: (I) a biologically- active substance; and (II) a specific monomeric compound which is obtainable by reacting: (if required, in the presence of a Bronsted acid or a Lewis acid) (a) at least one acidic, neutral or amphoteric organic compound which contains one or more active hydrogen atom-containing groups and which may be otherwise substituted or unsubstituted, or which may be saturated or may be unsaturated, with a least one olefinic bond of (b) at least one olefinically unsaturated cyclic ether of the formula: Image in which: R1, R2, R4, and R5 are as specifically defined in the disclosure.
