A polymer blend is prepared by dissolving chitosan and a second polymer in an acidic aqueous solution to form an aqueous polymer blend, dehydrating said aqueous polymer blend, and recovering said polymer blend. The second polymer may be selected from the group consisting of polyether glycols including polyethylene glycols; cellulose esters including cellulose acetate; poloxamers; polysaccharides including dextran and guar; polyvinylpyrrolidones; polyvinyl alcohols; and mixtures or copolymers thereof. These polymer blends swell in an acidic environment and deswell in a more neutral or basic environment. This technology is valuable for the dispensing of biologically active material or drugs into a surrounding environment, especially the environment as is found in the gastrointestinal tract. Since the various polymer blends of the present invention are not covalently or ionically crosslinked, but are physically combined, each polymer in the physical blend maintains its original chemical structure, and therefore, is safe for oral or other routes of administration.

Selon l'invention, un mélange de polymères est préparé par dissolution de chitosane et d'un second polymère dans une solution aqueuse acide afin de former un mélange de polymères aqueux, par déshydratation de ce mélange de polymères aqueux ainsi que par récupération de ce mélange de polymères. Le second polymère peut être choisi dans le groupe comprenant les glycols de polyéther comprenant les glycols polyéthylène; les esters cellulosiques comprenant l'acétate cellulosique; les poloxamères; les polysaccharides comprenant du dextran et du guar; les polyvinylpyrrolidones, les alcools polyvinyliques ainsi que leurs mélanges ou leurs copolymères. Ces mélanges de polymères gonflent dans un environnement acide et se dégonflent dans un environnement plus neutre ou basique. Cette technologie convient pour la distribution de matière active sur le plan biologique ou de médicaments dans un environnement ambiant, particulièrement l'environnement du tube digestif. Etant donné que les mélanges de polymères selon la présente invention ne sont pas réticulés par covalence ou ioniquement, mais sont combinés de façon physique, chaque polymère dans le mélange physique conserve sa structure chimique originale et par conséquent, convient à une administration par voie orale ou autre.
