A synthetic oligopeptide which evokes anti-HIV response has been prepared. The oligopeptide is useful as a vaccine and as a diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic agent in cases of HIV infection. The peptide is selected from the group of peptides consisting of the Env-K1 peptide and peptides that are functionally equivalent variants of the Env-K1 peptide. The variants can be derived from the Env-K1 peptide by addition, deletion, substitution or derivatization of at least one amino acid thereof.
