The present invention provides systems and methods to improve the performance and emission control of internal combustion engines equipped with nitrogen oxides storage-reduction ("NSR") emission control systems (206). The system comprises a NSR catalyst (206), a fuel processor (200) located upstream of the NSR catalyst, and at least one fuel injection port (208). The fuel processor (200) converts a fuel into a reducing gas mixture comprising CO and H2. The reducing gas mixture is then fed into the NSR catalyst (206), where it regenerates the NSR adsorbent, reduces the NOx to nitrogen, and optionally periodically desulfates the NSR catalyst. The fuel processor (200) comprises one or more catalysts, which facilitate reactions such as combustion, partial oxidation, and/or reforming and help consume excess oxygen present in an engine exhaust stream. The methods of the present invention provide for NSR catalyst adsorbent regeneration. Control strategies are provided to control the system and methods of the invention.

L'invention concerne des systèmes et des procédés servant à améliorer les performances et le contrôle des émissions de moteurs à combustion interne équipés de systèmes de contrôle d'émission (206) NSR (réduction-accumulation d'oxydes d'azote). Ce système est composé d'un catalyseur NSR (206), d'un dispositif de traitement de carburant (200) situé en amont du catalyseur NSR et d'au moins un orifice d'injection de carburant (208). Le dispositif de traitement de carburant (200) convertit le carburant en un mélange gazeux réducteur comprenant CO et H¿2?. Ce mélange alimente ensuite le catalyseur NSR (206), dans lequel il régénère l'adsorbant NSR, réduit NO¿x? en azote et désulfate éventuellement de façon périodique le catalyseur NSR. Ce dispositif de traitement de carburant (200) comporte un ou plusieurs catalyseurs, ce qui facilite les réactions, telles que la combustion, l'oxydation partielle et/ou le reformage et contribue à consumer le surplus d'oxygène présent dans le flux d'échappement du moteur. Ces procédés concernent la régénération de l'adsorbant du catalyseur NSR. Elle concerne également des stratégies de contrôle de ce système et de ces procédés.
