Abstract TAIL FIN UNIT FOR A LONG ROD PROJECTILE A tail fin unit (10) moulded from a plastics material which ablates when subjected to both propellant flash temperatures and in-flight aerodynamic heating, consists of a fin unit body member (12) which is coaxially attachable to the rear end of the projectile, and which is provided with a plurality of radially protrusive fins (16) each disposed as a helix of constant pitch around the moulding axis of the unit. Ablation of the fins (16) may not occur evenly, but because they are of constant pitch, any erosion of their leading edges (20) will occur without detriment to the spin rate of the projectile in flight. A preferred unit moulded from polyester or epoxy resin filled with Kevlar aramid fibres is capable of resisting gun chamber loads of 4000kg cm-2.
