A TECHNIOUE AND A TORCH FOR FABRICATING SINGLE MODE LIGHTGUIDE SOOT-FORMS Abstract This invention concerns with a Vapor-phase Axial Deposition (VAD) process. To form small diameter cores for single mode lightguide preforms, a soot stream, formed by a torch comprised of a plurality of concentrically mounted, spaced, glass tubes through which reactants and combustible materials are passed, is confined radially by a confining shield gas so as to reduce the crossection of the soot stream at least in the vicinity of a soot form being grown. In a preferred embodiment the confining is effected by means of a tapered shroud mounted about the end of the torch and a shield gas directed along the inner surface thereof to confine and direct the gases and reactants to the surface of the soot form.
