Giant magnetoresistive cobalt oxide compounds are produced by combinatorial synthesis. Combinatorial synthesis is done by using a substrate having an array of diverse materials thereon prepared by delivering components to predefined regions on a substrate and simultaneously reacting the components to form at least two materials. Other materials that can be prepared using these methods are covalent network solids, ionic solids and molecular solids. Examples are inorganic, organometallic, intermetallic, ceramic organic polymeric and composite materials. Once prepared, these materials can be screened for useful properties such as magnetoresistance. Thus, the present invention provides for the parallel synthesis and analysis of novel material having useful properties.

On produit des composés magnétorésistifs géants en oxyde de cobalt par synthèse combinatoire. On met en oeuvre la synthèse combinatoire en utilisant un substrat sur lequel une série de matériaux divers est préparée en appliquant les différents composants sur des régions prédéfinies du substrat en faisant réagir simultanément les composants afin de former au moins deux matériaux. Les autres matériaux qui peuvent être préparés par ces méthodes sont des solides réticulés covalents, des solides ioniques et des solides moléculaires, tels que des matériaux composites, polymères organiques, céramiques, intermétalliques, organométalliques et inorganiques. Une fois préparés, on peut analyser ces matériaux afin de détecter des propriétés utiles telles que la magnétorésistance. L'invention permet ainsi de synthétiser et d'analyser en parallèle des matériaux nouveaux ayant des propriétés utiles.
