A hinged crank arm offers a solution for people with limited knee flexion, most often those whom have undergone a Van Nes Rotationplasty surgery, that would otherwise be unable to ride a bicycle safely. The hinged crank arm allows the pedal to drop down to the appropriate level in order to enable foot clearance that allows full completion of a pedal rotation cycle. This is achieved by means of an outer rotating crank arm mounted to an inner crank arm with an attached hinge. The inner crank arm is left as long as possible in order to maximize the torque attainable by the rider pushing on the pedal. The outer rotating crank arm makes up the difference in length from that of a standard crank arm, however must allow the pedal to drop low enough at the top of the pedal rotation cycle to allow clearance of the rider's foot.
