Abstract An electronic thermostat and method for controlling the energization and de-energization of a furnace or air conditioner. The thermostat generates a signal representative of a deisred temperature set- point and a signal representing the ambient temperature at the thermostat. The thermostat energizes or de-energizes the furnace or air conditioner to cause the ambient temperature to move toward the set-point. The energization or de-energization time is adaptively modified as a function of the change in ambient temperature produced the previous time the furnace or air conditioner was energized or de-energized.
