There is provided a device for performing an initial piercing and dilating of a patient's trachea. The device has a needle within and extending beyond a sheath. After the needle is used to pierce the trachea, it may be removed and a guide wire (J-wire) inserted. A introducer dilator surrounds the sheath and is slidable over the sheath. The introducer dilator has a first position away from the distal end of the sheath and a second position in which the distal end of the sheath is substantially covered by the introducer dilator. The introducer dilator is then used to expand the initial piercing.

L'invention concerne un dispositif pour effectuer un perçage initial et une dilatation de la trachée d'un patient. Le dispositif comporte une aiguille à l'intérieur, et se prolongeant au-delà d'une gaine. Une fois que l'aiguille a été utilisée pour percer la trachée, elle peut être retirée et un fil-guide (fil J) inséré. Un dilatateur introducteur entoure la gaine et peut coulisser sur cette gaine. Le dilatateur introducteur possède une première position à l'opposé de l'extrémité distale de la gaine et une seconde position où l'extrémité distale est pratiquement couverte par le dilatateur introducteur. Le dilatateur introducteur est alors utilisé pour élargir le perçage initial.
