The synthesis involves an intramolecular Michael addition to yield the thermodynamic trans isomer. The compounds were found to be inhibitors of 5-lipoxygenase, an enzyme crucial to the biosynthesis of leukotrienes and useful for the treatment of various inflammatory diseases.
