A process for increasing toughness of glass particulates is provided. The process includes providing an aluminosilicate glass particulate, the glass particulate generally having the form of a sphere, and heating the glass particulate to a temperature greater than 6000C for a predetermined time. Thereafter, the glass particulate can be cooled to ambient temperature and the heating step can alter the failure mechanism of the glass particulate from a high energy failure that produces generally fine powder to a lower energy failure that produces generally large fragments. The glass particulate can be an amorphous glass particulate and may or may not have a nominal composition that corresponds to rhyolite, basalt, tholeiite, olivine and/or andesite
La présente invention concerne un procédé permettant d'augmenter la ténacité de particules de verre. Le procédé comprend les étapes consistant à fournir des particules de verre d'aluminosilicate, les particules de verre se présentant généralement sous la forme de sphères, puis à chauffer les particules de verre jusqu'à une température supérieure à 6000 °C pendant un temps déterminé. Les particules de verre peuvent ensuite être ramenées à la température ambiante et l'étape de chauffage peut faire passer le mécanisme de rupture des particules de verre d'une rupture à haute énergie qui produit généralement une fine poudre à une rupture à basse énergie qui produit généralement de grands fragments. Les particules de verre peuvent être des particules de verre amorphe et peuvent présenter une composition nominale qui correspond à la rhyolite, au basalte, à la tholéïte, à l'olivine et/ou à l'andésite.
