A water scrubber for removing emissions from the exhaust contained in flue gas that flows from a fireplace through a chimney stack comprises a housing having an outer wall and top and bottom ends. The housing provides a passage through which flue gas can flow. The water scrubber fiuther comprises a water spray system that involves a reservoir inside the housing near its base for holding water, a spray nozzle fluidly connected to the reservoir, and a water transport means for providing water to the spray nozzle fiom the reservoir. Additionally, the water scrubber comprises a means for mounting the housing to the chimney stack. By this design, water is sprayed from the spray nozzle across the passage, thereby contacting particulate matter in the flue gas flowing through the passage. The sprayed water and particulate matter then fall into the reservoir.
