Abstract of the Disclosure An improved ultrasonic nebulizer bowl of the type having a bowl-shaped cavity communicating with a piezoelectric crystal disposed under the cavity for nebu- lizing liquid medication disposed in the bowl. The improved crystal construction can also be used in other applications. The improvement prevents self-destruction of the surface of the crystal and comprises a protective pla- nar cover of a glass-like material disposed over the sur- face of the crystal in close spaced adjacent relationship thereto. An energy-coupling fluid is disposed between the protective planar cover and the surface of the crystal. Finally, sealing means are disposed about the periphery of the protective planar cover for preventing fluid loss from between the protective planar cover and the surface of the crystal. The protective planar cover can comprise the bot- tom of the cavity, the bottom of a separate bowl insert, or a sheet peripherally attached to the top of the crystal. Additionally, the piezoelectric crystal, which has a top disk electrode and a bottom disk electrode for making electrical contact therewith on the top and bottom surfaces thereof, is modified by having the bottom electrode of substantially smaller diameter than the diameter of the piezoelectric crystal whereby the electrical contact to the piezoelectric crystal on the bottom thereof and, therefore, the energy concentration is adjacent the center-thereof.
