ABSTRACT This invention relates to novel unsaturated acyclic phosphonate derivatives of certain purines and pyrimidines of the formula: Image or Image Formula I Formula II the stereoisomeric forms and mixtures thereof, tautomeric forms and the pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof, which are useful as antiviral agents, to methods and inter- mediates useful for their preparation and to their end-use application as antiviral agents effective against DNA vi- ruses, retroviruses and viruses involved in tumor forma- tion.
