From a single species of Marchantiales, a .DELTA.5 fatty acid desaturase gene, a .DELTA.6 fatty acid desaturase gene and a .DELTA.6 fatty acid elongase gene are isolated. By transferring these genes into a higher plant, a transformant plant capable of producing arachidonic acid or eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) can be obtained.
