Use of at least one heteropolyacid HnAaDcOy.xH2O, where A = phosphorus, boron, silicon, germanium, tin, arsenic, antimony, copper, nickel, cobalt, iron, cerium, thorium, chromium and their mixtures; D = molybdenum, tungsten, vanadium, and their combinations; a = 0.1-10; c = 6-18; n = number of acid hydrogens in the heteropolyacid and is a number greater than 1; y = number of oxygens in the heteropolyacid and is a number from 10 to 70; and x = number of moles of crystallization water and is a number from 0 to 40, as catalyst in the preparation of esters of unsaturated carboxylic acids by direct esterification of the said acids by alcohols or by transesterification, these reactions being carried out in liquid phase.
