ABSTRACT Method for refining glassy material where a volume of the molten material is placed in an enclosed vessel with a layer of foam present above the surface of the melt. A subatmospheric pressure is created in the vessel to assist in refining of the material and a region within the vessel but above the melt is heated to accelerate collapsing of the foam in the headspace above the melt.
