The circuit (10) compares an image vector to codebook entries which are representative vectors from a vector space. The circuit (10) provides an indication as to which codebook vector most closely matches the image vector. Selection circuitry (121) is provided for comparing the distance values between the image vectors and codebook entries to generate an output signal representative of the codebook vector having the smallest distance.
